Coffee? Yes, please

Thank you, Mister Goat.

Maybe this guy’s grandfather, many times removed, can be credited for our love of coffee.

As the sun dawned on the 29th of September, 2023, a familiar aroma wafted through the air in homes, cafes, and offices across the nation. It was a scent that signaled the start of the day for millions of people, a bittersweet symphony that invigorated the senses and kick-started the mind. It was the smell of coffee, and on this particular day, it held a special significance. It was National Coffee Day, a day dedicated to the celebration of this brewed delight that plays such a pivotal role in our daily lives.

This day is my favorite “holiday.”

With age, I have migrated to a decidedly milder blend and away from the strong, dark brew that “would put hair on your chest,” the elders said. I used to drink it with syrupy flavors like butterscotch (ewww!). Today, I’m content having a middling brew (somewhere between espresso and blonde roast). My coffee is drunken black.

But how did coffee come to be such a universally loved beverage? The history of coffee is as rich and complex as its flavor profile. It's believed to have originated in the Ethiopian highlands, where the story goes that a shepherd noticed his goats were especially energetic after eating berries from a certain tree. Curious, he made a drink with the berries and felt the same effects. The news of this energizing beverage spread, and so began the journey of coffee across continents and cultures. For kicks and giggles, do a search on “Frisky Goat” coffee houses and watch what happens — with a warm cup, of course.

In modern times, coffee has become more than just a drink; it's a social unifier, a symbol of hospitality, a source of comfort, and a creative muse. It's interwoven into our daily routines, from the morning cup that helps us shake off sleep, to the afternoon pick-me-up during a long day at work, to the leisurely weekend brew enjoyed with friends and family. This universal love for coffee is what makes National Coffee Day such a momentous occasion. It's a day to appreciate the richness of coffee culture and the joy this humble beverage brings to our lives.

Indeed, coffee has permeated all aspects of our lives. It's a testament to the human spirit's desire for exploration and innovation, as we've taken this simple berry and transformed it into countless variations - from the robust espresso to the delicate cappuccino, from the trendy cold brew to the traditional Turkish coffee (which may not be that great in your Kuerig). And let's not forget the vast array of flavored coffees, each a unique expression of creativity and personal preference.

Happy National Coffee Day!

So, as we celebrate National Coffee Day, let's take a moment to appreciate the journey of coffee, from the ancient highlands of Ethiopia to the modern coffee shops in every corner of the world. Let's savor every sip, knowing that each drop carries within it centuries of history and tradition. Let's remember that coffee is more than just a beverage; it's a testament to our shared humanity and our collective love for this delicious, invigorating, and inspiring drink.

Happy National Coffee Day, coffee lovers! Here's to the humble coffee bean and all the joy it brings to our lives. May your cups always be full, your beans always be fresh, and your love for coffee never cease to grow.

And thank you, frisky goats.
